Mercedes, Finders Keepers, The Outsider, and If It Bleeds have very well-written, active, colorful, and threatening villains that Holly and her partner(s) come up against. Lastly, the antagonists are not very interesting characters. Also, Barbara's poetry subplot has nothing to do with the story, feels like filler material. I have always liked the character of Holly in previous stories, but I believe the stories are more interesting when she is actively working with a partner or partners rather than on her own as in this one. I think readers are familiar enough with COVID that the subject could have been toned down a little, and I feel it interrupts the flow of the story. As another reviewer mentioned, maybe my expectations were too high.įirst of all, the story hits quite heavily on the COVID 19 pandemic.
